About

Mnemosine is the (Italian) name of the Greek goddess of memory, mother of all muses. This mythological figure is very contemporaneous, because it crystallizes in a unique figure the relationship between the human being, its memory, its creativeness, and the democracy.

This website is dedicated to Mnemosine, a young (French) Non profit Organization (NPO), created in February 2009.

Mnemosine Short Presentation

The mission of Mnemosine is to provide a solid, operational framework to tackle the Human Digital Heritage (in the sense of patrimony). The human Digital Heritage raises a number of questions that belongs to the politic, juridic, technic, economic, society... fields.

Our point of view is that these questions are fundamentally of ethical nature. Thus, to give a solid fundation to its action, Mnemosine has a unique, special feature: it includes in its legal status a UDHDR, which means a text called purposely a

"Universal Declaration of Human Digital Rights".

The main idea behind this NPO is that men are the best possible insurers of their own patrimony. It is a fundamental text for this organization, because it provides the necessary guidelines to its actions.

Mnemosine Vision, ambitions and Proposals

Our vision is that the links between memory, Internet and democracy is a deep debate that will empower during the next decade. Our ambition is to mature and propose a service, together with a credible structure, adapted to the long term management of personal data, through a unique, coherent approach.

To that aim, Mnemosine proposes an operational project. It consists not only to define a technological service, but also to consider a perennial  structure to host it :

  1. Mnemosine proposes to grant to anybody an access to a unique, digital account. This account is part of a digital space where any of us can as freely and safely as possible constitute, preserve,  have rights, and ultimately transmit personal data for familial or historical purposes. To give us this freedom, Mnemosine proposes that any information system managing the personal data of its members be UDHDR compliant.
  2. However, what would such a service good for if the organization hosting it disrupts, due for instance to bankruptcy? Thus Mnemosine proposes also a solid structure project, in order to provide a reasonable framework for our data to be kept available and readable for transgenerationnal period of time.

For instance, to tackle its mission efficiently, Mnemosine has been thought as a Non Governmental Organization with national or local representations.

A collaborative approach

This project can not be the one of a man or an organization alone. Thus the goal of this website is to be a collaborative platform, allowing to anybody to participate to the construction of this organization and its project. Forums and workgroups are availables to that purpose. We invite anybody to subscribe to this website and to collaborate to the project of Mnemosine.
